Depending on the wind and weather conditions, the track will be sandy
The asphalt surface of the track is called 'Flying Dutch'.
In the current state, Zandvoort offers ten right turns and four left turns. The most famous of these is the first turn, Tarzanbocht, which is also banked and allows for a range of different lines.
Race Review Manthey EMA contested the second race of the 2023 DTM season at Zandvoort in the Netherlands last weekend (23-25 June) with the two Porsche 911 GT3 R piloted by Dennis Olsen (#90) and Thomas Preining (#91). The team once again showed a stronger performance in the second race of the weekend at Zandvoort. Thomas Preining (Austria) took the lead in the drivers' standings in the Porsche 911 GT3 R number 91.
The expectations and preparations for the weekend at Zandvoort were shaped by a number of factors that can have a decisive influence on the course of the race. The 4.259-kilometre circuit in the Dutch dunes is particularly demanding on the tyres of the cars due to the track roughness, the tyre energy input as well as the sand being blown onto the track by the wind. The high temperatures expected over the weekend, with air temperatures more than thirty degrees Celsius, also posed a challenge for both the material and the drivers. In general, the track allows for fluid driving but offers very few overtaking opportunities. The only good passing point is the first corner of the dune circuit.
On Saturday morning, Thomas Preining put the number 91 car in the tenth position on the grid with a time of 1:33.075 minutes, Dennis Olsen (Norway) followed in 18th place with 1:33.279 minutes. In the starting phase of the race, both drivers lost positions. Dennis Olsen was called in for his mandatory pit stop right at the beginning of the pit window. With the cars in front of him following a similar strategy, he was unable to significantly pull away from the field and, after 60 minutes of racing, finished 16th, just out of the points. Preining entered the pit lane with the sister car a brief time later. Here the pit stop strategy helped to make up a few places. In seventh place, Preining secured Porsche's only top-ten result on Saturday as well as important championship points.
Much like at the season opener at Oschersleben, Manthey EMA came back stronger on the second race day. With a lap time of 1:33.364 minutes, Thomas Preining finished the second qualifying session in second place behind Audi driver Ricardo Feller. The Norwegian Olsen placed the 911 with the number 90 on the grid in ninth place with a lap time of 1:33.736 minutes. After dropping back to third at the start, Preining regained his position thanks to a good pit strategy and a flawless pit stop and defended it until the end of the race, clocking 2.719 seconds behind the leader. Dennis Olsen, who had worked his way up to eighth place in the first twenty minutes of the race, finished ninth in a hard-fought midfield. With his second podium finish of the season, Thomas Preining took the lead in the drivers' standings. His teammate also scored crucial championship points.
Manthey EMA thus maintains third place in the DTM team standings with 76 points. In the drivers' standings, Preining leads by four points (55 points), while Olsen is ninth overall (26 points) after the races in the Dutch dunes.
The next round of the DTM will take place in two weeks' time at the Norisring from 7 to 9 July 2023. Before that, the 75th edition of the 24 Hours of Spa is on the schedule for Manthey EMA - there the car entered in the DTM under the starting number 90 will compete with Julien Andlauer (France), Kévin Estre (France) and Laurens Vanthoor (Belgium) at the wheel (#92).
